Crockpot Hamburgers

Chin up, buttercup, just because you had to put the grill away for the season or you don’t feel like flipping burgers in the snow, doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a tasty burger during the frigid winter months. My jaw almost hit the floor when I saw this recipe on The Crockpot Recipe Exchange, David and I thought it was too good to be true, so we LITERALLY made it the next night for dinner because we had to see for ourselves if this would actually work. And much to my surprise it actually did! Other than the patties shrinking to half their original size, I have to say I was really pleased with the way that they turned out. It doesn’t have that smokey grill flavor, but we were thinking to put a little liquid smoke inside it, or some kind of dry seasoning with some water and let it smoke up into the meat as it cooks, and they would be DANG good! And, other than building a little coil system in your crockpot, the mechanics of the whole thing were pretty simple.

Ingredients:

  • Ground Beef (amount dependent upon the number of people you’re trying to feed, remember you’ll probably want to make the patties a little larger because they will shrink in the crock pot)
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and Pepper
  • Hamburger fixings of your choice!
  • Aluminum Foil
  • Mason jar lid rings

Instructions:

First you want to build a little rack so that your burgers don’t sit in the bottom of the crockpot, because the grease and fat will drip out (gross, I know!) and so you don’t want the cooked patties sitting in that making them gross! So, place the rings on the bottom of the crock pot (we didn’t have rings so we just used aluminum foil to make rings to raise the burgers off the bottom.

Once I got that done, I made the patties! I just mixed up my ground beef with some salt, pepper and worcestershire sauce, and then made the patties by hand, because we don’t have one of those fancy patty makers (another item to add to the registry!!!!)

So, once you get the patties made, you’ll want to make some more of the little coil things that you can use if you have to separate a second later of patties, we had to do 3 layers I believe, so you just roll the foil, and then coil it up, however many you need to separate the patties while they are cooking in the crockpot!

Then put your first layer of burgers on top of the coils in the bottom of the crockpot. and layer coils, burgers, coils, burgers, until you have all your patties inside the crock pot!

Then cover, and cook for 4 hours on high! This basically just steams the meat, its pretty cool, and I was just so impressed we were able to have burgers even though we don’t really have access to a grill! Thats what I call a win!

Once they were done, like I said they shrank up so I had to eat a patty and a half on my burger because for some reason we bought the extra large buns, which REALLY accentuated the smallness of the bun! We served this one up with David’s sweet potato wedges, which were also a huge hit at a dinner thing we went to with some of our friends before the holiday! So delicious, I love those things! Definitely thing this one is worth a try if you’re having that mid-winter burger craving, or just longing for the dog days of summer! Also, its great because you can just cut on the crock pot while you’re out running errands, or doing chores and a delicious dinner is ready in no time, with minimal clean up and no grill struggles! Happy cooking, and enjoy!
